One of my most favorite hobbies is social dancing! My husband and I are known to cut a rug doing a little rumba, cha cha, fox trot, and east coast swing. It’s the perfect hobby because it is something you can do together, it burns calories, and it’s an excuse to dress up and look nice. One of the biggest dilemmas I faced from the very beginning of our dancing days was “Where do I put all my STUFF?!”. It is very inconvenient to carry a handbag when dancing; and your partner likely won’t have enough pockets to store all of your things.
The secrets are simple: just dress the part and minimize! (Minimize…Scary word for a pin up, am I right?!)

Put longer hair up in a cute ponytail or updo to keep it from getting in the way of dancing, and to help you stay cool! I don’t stress too much about hair, any complex updo falls out after a long night of dancing, so I keep it simple.
Wear cotton or another breathable material. My blouse and skirt are by Pinup Girl Clothing, I love this brand because they use high quality materials in their designs that are perfect to wear out dancing! This particular skirt also has the bonus of pockets (a perfect place to hold your hand fan).
Wow, I talk about undies a lot on this blog! In social dance it is perfectly acceptable for a flash of your FULL COVERAGE undergarments to show for a brief moment (pun intended) while spinning or doing another move. I wear these dance shorts over my normal undies to keep everything covered when I am spinning like crazy. Black is always a safe color to purchase, but I recommend buying several pairs to coordinate with your outfits!
Depending on where you go dancing your shoe needs will vary. I live in a small town so dances are often held at venues without a true dance floor, if you have the wrong shoe you will be sticking to the floor! I love these character shoes for most dancing opportunities (unless the floor is really slick). I found that they run true to size and they even have wide width available (bless them)!
You won’t catch me ANYWHERE without a hand fan, I like to buy them in bulk so I have lots of options, plus I can keep one in all of our vehicles. Attach elastic to the fan so you can wear it around your wrist for extra versatility.
Drink it. Need I say more? Personally, I bring my own water bottle and ask them to fill it up (or I fill it up at a fountain).
I’ve discovered the perfect accessory to help minimize AND enjoy an active night on the dance floor. The RooSport. I cannot say enough great things about this product! It was designed for runners, but it is a godsend for social dance as well. In my photo you can only see the front flap, everything else is on the inside of my skirt, basically creating a secure and easy-to-reach pocket for my valuables! You can also easily disguise it with an elastic cinch belt. I have found that the version that includes an outside zipper pocket (RooSport 2.0) is the PERFECT size, it also comes in several lovely colors!
In my RooSport:
- Phone (it actually comes in two sizes including the RooSport Plus for large smart phones)
- Cash/Cards (read their magnet warning for certain cards)
- Lipgloss (smaller/flatter tubes work best)
- Safety pin (attached inside)
- Extra hair tie (attached to safety pin)
- Bobby pins (attached to safety pin)
- Ear plugs (music at most venues can often be loud enough to cause hearing damage)
And I still have room to spare!
All that’s missing now is the dance floor, music, and your partner…get out there and have a worry-free night of dancing!!
